Prosecutors revealed Tuesday that Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old accused of fatally shooting conservative activist Charlie Kirk, left a hidden note confessing to his roommate and exchanged incriminating texts, as they announced seven charges including aggravated murder and plans to seek the death penalty.
Robinson, appearing remotely for his first court hearing, faces charges of aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, two counts of obstruction of justice, two counts of witness tampering, and committing a violent crime in the presence of children. Utah County Attorney Jeffrey Gray stated Robinson is presumed innocent until proven guilty and will face a jury trial. He is held without bail in a special housing unit at Utah County Jail.
Gray detailed evidence from a note under Robinson's keyboard, discovered by his roommate – described as his romantic partner and transgender individual transitioning from male to female – which read: "I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk, and I'm going to take it." Texts allegedly showed Robinson admitting the act, saying he had "had enough of his hatred" and that "some hate can't be negotiated out." Robinson reportedly expressed regret for involving his partner, who cooperated with investigators.
DNA on the rifle trigger matched Robinson, and his father suspected it was a family heirloom. Post-shooting messages to his roommate described attempts to retrieve the weapon from a drop point amid lockdowns. Robinson allegedly told his parents he was the shooter and hinted at suicide before surrendering with a retired deputy sheriff's help.
The roommate's parents grew suspicious after seeing surveillance footage, confronting Robinson, who initially denied involvement. Gray noted Robinson's increasing political shift toward leftist views, including support for LGBTQ+ rights, but declined to confirm if Kirk's transgender-related comments motivated the attack.
Kirk, 31, was killed by a neck shot from a rooftop during a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025. The bullet narrowly missed others, including children. Robinson's parents, after family discussions, persuaded him to turn himself in after 33 hours.
A memorial for Kirk is set for September 21 at Arizona's State Farm Stadium.
